Keep in mind that this piece was written to be performed, not read. I still like it, though -- it's what I'll be performing for my Spoken Word final on Friday. Enjoy.

Drops of Jupiter, soy latte
Meet Virginia, smokes a pack a day
Oh wait, hold on, that’s me
The music is flowing in
I’m caught up in the tide
Carrying
Eddying
Swirling
Racing
I never want to leave
Warm depth
Low
Soothing
Frigid heights
High
Screeching
I love it
The rhythm
The current
I just can’t live without it
What’s my age again
Steal your honey, stole your bike
Show me what it’s like
To dream in black and white
So I can leave this world tonight
Holding on too tight
Breathe the breath of life
Rhythm
Pulse
The rhythm is my pulse
The beats match my heart
Or does my heart match the beat?
I am tuned
Finely, like an instrument
It draws me in like a drug
The best
Drug
Sweet, sweet
Seductive
Enticing me
Never leave
Remember the name
One week
Rock star
This is how I disappear
For days at a time
Turn up the music
Tune out reality
They left before the sun came up that day
Fingertips have memories
Mine can’t forget the curves of your body
Soft
Intoxicating
The feel of your lips
Sends tremors crashing through
Putty in your hands
I can’t resist
I must obey
I wish that I could fly
Into the sky
So very high
Just like a dragonfly
Hangin’ round
The music has me
A willing captive
It holds me and commands me and tears me away
It speaks for me
The language
I wish I could say for myself
But I can’t
I just
Let the music
Talk
My insecure conditions
And the tears upon the pillow that I shed
Laid bare for everyone to see
They give me strength, don’t you understand?
The music is in me, of me, with me, is me
It’s the reason
Why I’m here, why I live, why I breathe and drink and laugh and cry
And love and lose and eat and sleep
Completely incomplete
It picks me up when I am down
It leads where I must follow
So quiet but I finally woke up
If you’re sad
Then it’s time you spoke up too
The story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
The tears don’t come
Not through my eyes
But through my words
Look at the stars
Look how they shine
There is beauty in the combination
Of words and beats and rhythms and
Song
Desperate for changing
Starving for truth
I’m closer to where I started
Back to the beginning
Not everything in this magical world
Is quite what it seems
I am the messenger
My voice will be heard
