Merfolk: The Summer at Aegir's Cove
When man first sailed the seas, or fished off the shores, or sifted through the sands to find washed up treasures, or drowned, humanity came to the attention of the five children of Sea: Eadro the Fish Bearer, Qyrl the Tentacled One, C'et, the Shelled Maker, Kalahiki the Hunter, and Sedna the Wave-Singer. Each blessed their favorites of the humans with magical powers, and sent some of their children, the apsarae, spirit versions of sea animals, to merge with the humans whose personality most fitted the individual apsara, transforming them into merfolk and allowing them to shift shapes into human, animal, or hybrid mer forms. However, life in the sea is dangerous, and many of the mer exhausted their energies trying to survive, only to transform back into humans and drown when their magic ran out. The Children of Sea agreed that something had to be done, and Sedna offered some of her children, the whales and dolphins, to swim to the depths of the ocean grottoes where fonts of magic bubbled, and return to the merfolk with that power periodically. This process changed these whales and dolphins, turning them into half-spirit creatures known as Rorqual, and their gifts of magic are vital to the survival of marine communities, for magic can be used to control the weather, heal injuries, communicate telepathically, cure poison and illness, manipulate water, transform something into something else, sense food and safe locations, and influence emotions, among other things. The Children of Sea gave another gift, however... dukar coral which bonds with the skeletons of living creatures to bestow adaptive powers, and 3 times the lifespan of most mortals. With these blessings, the merfolk prospered, and in honor of their divine patrons, they formed five noble houses, one for each Child of Sea. The Merfolk have lived alongside humanity, and in the beach town of Aegir's Cove, many of them go about their lives, working jobs that rely on the sea. Unfortunately, the recent threat of pollution has given birth to monsters and horrors, invading the deep, killing the dukar coral, hunting the Rorqual, and destroying the grottoes, while tourism and commercial interests have been infiltrating the formerly small town in hopes of making it the next big resort hot spot. It is up to the merfolk to balance the interests of humanity and the sea, clear out the corruption, and try to have a good summer.

To play, you will need to post a bio including your character's...
NAME:
HOUSE: (See below)
APSARA: (depends on your house)
APPEARANCE: (Human form)
MERFORM: (depends on your apsara)
DUKAR ORDER: (See below)

STORY: How did you become mer? Does it run in your family for generations? Were you chosen by a Rorqual and brought to a grotto to bond with your apsara? Did your dreams compel you to dive into a grotto? Why did you choose your dukar order? What do you plan to do with your gifts and what do you think of the changes of your town?

Subject: Houses
HOUSE LORELEI: The warriors and hunters of the Merfolk, chosen of Kalahiki the Hunter, the massive and wise predator who bestowed longevity upon the merfolk. On land, members of House Lorelei are devastating in battle, dodging, using weapons or fighting unarmed, but in the water their combat skills are unmatched. However, they are prone to frenzy at the smell of blood, and must fight to keep control in such situations.
Apsara: Sharks, eels, skates, rays, guitarfish, barracuda, viperfish, gulper eels, anglerfish.

HOUSE MELUSINE: The lorekeepers, historians, and scholars of the merfolk, chosen of Sedna the Wave-Singer, once a sorrowful land-dweller who sought shelter in the waters as mother of the air-breathing creatures of the sea, and the creator of the Rorqual. Members of House Melusine have a greater connection to the surface world, and tend to pick up greater skills on land than other merfolk. However, they cannot breathe underwater, though they can hold their breath for an extremely long period of time, and must surface every six hours.
Apsara: Whales, dolphins, porpoises, pinnipeds (seals, walruses, sea lions), otters, sea snakes, saltwater crocodiles, sea turtles, and some diving birds.

HOUSE SYRINX: The artists, dancers and musicians of the merfolk, and the chosen of Eadro the Fish Bearer, the majestic leviathan who guides the schools and who gave merfolk their power to shapeshift. Members of House Syrinx can command sea life, though only the most powerful can control anything other than their apsara's species. Unfortunately, they are also the most tied to the sea, and lose willpower each day that they do not spend at least an hour submerged in water.
Apsara: Lionfish, seahorses, swordfish, marlins, sunfish, mackerel, tuna, parrotfish, pufferfish, clownfish, tangs, butterflyfish, angelfish, anthias, grammas, dragonets, damsels, dartfish, filefish, flounder, hamlets, hawkfish, pipefish, squirrelfish, triggerfish, etc.

HOUSE GLAUCUS: The artisans, builders, architects and designers of the merfolk, these are the Chosen of C'et the Shelled Maker, the great crustacean who created the first (and some say, most beautiful) pearl and transformed some coral into dukar varieties to bond with merfolk. They have a gift for prophecy, and use it to predict their best course of action and whether or not a design will work. However, with a few tropical exceptions (such as blue lobsters and some delicate, brightly-colored shrimp), many of them are less beautiful and alluring and more bizarre-looking than other merfolk, though they retain a sort of grace when they move.
Apsara: Lobsters, crabs, horseshoe crabs, shrimp, sea urchins, conchs, whelks, etc.

HOUSE JULANAR: The scientists, explorers, and magicians of the merfolk, they are the Chosen of Qyrl the Tentacled One, the cleverest and most adaptable Child of Sea, who taught the merfolk how to use magic. Members of House Julanar are able to become more fluid, becoming hard to spot and imprison and allowing them to regenerate. However, they are prone to panic, and their fears make it hard to resist fleeing when standing their ground would serve better.
Apsara: Octopus, squid, cuttlefish, jellyfish, nudibranchs (sea slugs), polychaete worms, anemones, and nautilus

Subject: Dukar Orders
The Dukar are a sort of martial artists/mages/protectors whose skeletons have been fused with magical Dukar coral, which grants them special powers. While merfolk are automatically members of a specific House because of their apsara, they can choose an order of Dukars to join. The first four orders can master different abilities (paths), while the last two are the most powerful magic-users.

JHIMARI, THE RED DUKARS: The warriors of the dukars, their red coral weaponry make them effective peacekeepers, as do their talents for energy blast and enchantment magic. Paths: Claw, Fist, Justice, Messenger, Phantom, Shield, Sounding, Swimmer, Tapal, Tentacle, Trident, Warrior's Eye

KUPAVI, THE BLUE DUKARS: Formed for the defense of the coral cities, grottoes, and other important sites, they tend to grow blue coral armor and master protective wards and force field magic, as well as transformation powers. Paths: Claw, Crystal, Fist, Justice, Light, Messenger, Misdirection, Shield, Sounding, Stinger, Swimmer

MAALIRNI, THE GREEN DUKARS: The seers, scholars, watchers, spies, eyes and ears of the Dukars, this order's senses are enhanced thanks to their green corals, and they are skilled at teleportation, summoning and divination magic. Paths: Claw, Fist, Foeform, Justice, Messenger, Shield, Sounding, Swimmer, Trident, Warrior's Eye

NUMOSI, THE WHITE DUKARS: The most adaptable of the Dukar orders, where the others will fully master 2 or 3 paths of coral manipulation, the Numosi are encouraged to learn the basic abilities of many different paths, making them less skilled, but more flexible. They are also skilled at illusion and the magic of life and death. Paths: Claw, Fist, Foeform, Justice, Light, Messenger, Misdirection, Phantom, Shield, Sounding, Stinger, Swimmer, Sympathetic, Tapal, Tentacle, Wound.

HMURAI, THE PURPLE DUKARS: Pure magicians, this order focuses on learning and creating new spells, enhanced by the purple coral rarely seen but fused to their bones. All magic is equally increased for them.

PERSANAI, THE YELLOW DUKARS: Where the Hmurai master the essence of magic, the yellow dukars master the powers of the mind, manifesting telepathic, mind control, and telekinetic abilities... many refer to them as the "Jedi" of the Dukars. They fight in tandem, each mentally linked to their allies and a step ahead of their enemies, and their psychic blades are a match for any lightsaber.

Subject: Dukar Paths
WEAPONS: Kupavi, Maalirni, Numosi, and Jhimari are all expected to master at least one weapon path.
- Claw Path: Retractable coral claws manifest as hardened fingernails, out of the backs of the hands (a la Wolverine), or sharp barbs.
- Fist Path: The hand and arm are covered in a gauntlet of hardened coral, glowing with the order's color.
- Tapal Path: Named for a curved, L-shaped weapon that resembles two blades (one smaller and hooklike, the other long and flat, like a sabre or scimitar, with grips inside the blade itself so that it can be swung through the water with two hands), this path instead grows a blade of fine, slicing/piercing coral from the knuckles and forearm of one hand, allowing greater mobility.
- Tentacle Path: Transforms the arm into a flexible coral tentacle for grappling ability.
- Trident Path: The hand sprouts three long tines of the trident.

DEFENSE:
- Path of Crystal: A coral crystal appears on the palm, allowing the Dukar to reach out and harden the water directly in front of the crystal, making a force shield.
- Path of the Shield: Coral armor grows from the arm opposite the weapon arm, and as the dukar becomes more powerful, covers the entire body.
- Path of the Wound: The body resists one type of wound (piercing, slashing, or bludgeoning).

SENSES:
- Messenger: Allows the Dukar to communicate with any other Dukar, with far greater range than telepathy powers or magic.
- Misdirection: Makes the Dukar difficult to see and reach, for the foe's senses tell him the Dukar is a few feet away from where he actually is, blurs his form, or even makes a mirror image of him.
- Phantom: Progressively grants greater stealth... beginners can make their scents (even from blood) vanish, higher learners can make their movements silent, experts can disappear in shadows, and masters can camouflage themselves perfectly.
- Sounding: Provides echolocation.
- Stinger: Creates a poisonous coral needle that can slow or paralyze opponents... this power can combine with weapon paths.
- Warrior's Eye: Increases the dukar's senses and focus in combat.

MOVEMENT: (rumors exist of other movement paths, but at the moment, only this one is known)
- Swimmer: Mimics the swimming speed of various creatures (squid jets, dolphin flukes, sea lion "wings", etc) or increases those speeds.

ARCANE:
- Foeform: Allows the owner to transform into increasingly dissimilar beings in the following order: 1) same body shape and size, 2) can grow larger but retain same shape, 3) humanoids can become non-humanoids, and 4) become larger dissimilar beings
- Light: Coral creates illumination or dazzles, blinds or hypnotizes foes.
- Sympathetic: the Dukar can heal others by taking their wounds onto herself.
- Justice: Used for internal affairs and making sure no Dukar goes rogue, these powers allow one to limit, stop, or permanently remove the coral powers of another.

Subject: Becoming a mermaid/merman
Merfolk are born human, though babies retain the ability to breathe underwater after feeding, allowing them to survive if their mother can't make it to shore before giving birth. Many have been human all their lives, with no clue. Merfolk can be born to human parents, and it isn't until they reach puberty that they begin to feel the dreams and the calling to the sea. When they do reach the water (those raised by merfolk parents and guardians are waved on their way with congratulations, happy tears, and promises of a celebratory dinner afterward), a Rorqual (usually a dolphin) will arrive and temporarily grant water breathing to the nereid (as all fledgling merfolk without apsara are known), and then guide him to the nearest grotto, where the nereid must enter and wait for the apsara to arrive and merge with him. This transforms the nereid into a "nixe" gaining the hybrid form, shapeshifting and a burst of magic. Each apsara is fitting for that person's soul, and each is, if not beautiful, intriguing and "right" feeling for him or her... no one is disappointed or ostracized by their apsara. Mer forms have the upper torso of a human (though often with the coloration, sometimes scales and fins or plates or hide of the apsara), and in place of the legs, the lower body of the apsara (typically a tail, fins, tentacles, pseudopods, tendrils, or one long tentacle, though House Melusine or Glaucus might have legs, fur, claws, paddle tails, shells, or flippers). Generally they will have something that resembles a tail, even if it is a long tentacle, many tentacles, a fish tail, orca flukes, shark fins, seal flippers and lower body, stingray "wings" and poison stinger, lobster tail, or nudibranch "foot," (though sunfish merfolk might be the exception). Merfolk can shift “tails” into humanoid legs with the same patterns, fur, scales, at will in order to climb better or kick harder.
The Rorqual, meanwhile, spreads the word to the Merfolk community, and members of each house hasten and greet the new mermaid or merman when she or he emerges from the grotto. She is then formally welcomed into her House, and if she has not grown up among merfolk, she is taught everything. Merfolk are fairly tight-knit communities, lead by the silver-haired elders (known as Naugs), and so new mer will often be offered housing or a job (there is talk about building a university in Aegir's Cove to offer scholarships for new merfolk and provide a place for the large numbers of marine biologists who descend on the town). The Dukars will discuss the possibility of joining one of their orders after the nixe has had time to adjust to the new form and powers. Becoming a Dukar involves training and, when the tests are passed, the nixe is put under enchanted sleep while the order performs a ritual to painlessly bond the coral to his skeleton.
Merfolk can live on land, and many have homes, businesses (all tied to the sea, somehow) and family in Aegir's Cove. There is also a well-populated coral city, Vivienne, located several miles off the coast, hidden in a mazelike reef, and there are rumors that the sunken city of Ys might be nearby, hidden beneath the seafloor in a massive grotto that hasn't been found by modern mer.

Subject: Dukar Orders
NAME: Phillip
HOUSE: Syrinx
APSARA: Leafy Sea Dragon
APPEARANCE: Phillip has a mane of wavy brown hair that falls to his shoulders. Every so often he likes to do something new with it (braid it, gel it, dye it bright colors, etc). His eyes are a warm, deep brown, with naturally long eyelashes, and his eyebrows are very expressive. His cheekbones are fairly high, and his lips are soft and full. His skin is tanned from the sun and his Mediterranean complexion, and he prefers to wear either t-shirts and jeans or his wetsuit or swim trunks. He is 6'2" tall, and sort of gangly-looking, but comfortable in his own skin. His italian-american heritage makes him pretty hairy, but he likes it, and keeps in shape by swimming regularly and hitting up the gym.
MERFORM: His skin melts into warm gold with white stripes, and leafy turquoise and brown fins emerge from his elbows, shoulders, back, ears, and hips. His legs turn into a seahorse-like prehensile tail, with leafy fins down the spine and leafy flukes at the tip. Quick-buzzing translucent dorsal fins sprout from his back to help project him through the water. His hands become webbed as well, and gills appear along his neck, protected by more translucent fins.
DUKAR ORDER: Order of Numos (the "i" indicates plural), the White Dukars (Paths: Tentacle, Foeform, Sympathetic, Swimmer, Phantom)
OCCUPATION: SCUBA instructor at the "Making Waves" surf, scuba, and swim shop.
STORY: Phillip lived inland most of his life, was raised by strictly religious parents, and didn't see the sea until he went to college. He felt like he was coming home, and one night he got out of bed, left the dorms, and slid into the water. It was there that he was met by a strange sight... a narwhal, drawn well out of its normally arctic territory, and seeming to glow in the moonlight. It swam right up to him, and when he reached out his hand to touch it, power, peace, and breath flooded into him. He held on tight as it dove down into the reef below, tapping the wall with its spiral "unicorn" tusk, and silently encouraging him to swim inside as a doorway appeared! When he did, he found himself in a bubbling chamber lit by bio-luminescent walls and full of rainbow crystals and corals. Soon, a strange creature... a leafy sea dragon, relative of a seahorse, but appearing almost part plant, swam into the chamber, and when the apsara bonded with him, it was like everything made sense. He emerged to welcoming merfolk, and later chose the path of the white dukars to increase his adaptability, providing him with greater connection to the sea. He graduated and is now working in Aegir's Cove, sharing his love of the sea with tourists and others... who, like him, might someday answer a call they don't clearly understand. He does want a university to be built in town, but he privately thinks most of the tourists are out of their minds, and does not want hotels and condos tearing up the landscape. He has a small apartment in town, and a more spacious home he sculpted himself in the coral city. He still goes to church regularly, since the spiritual connection reminds him of what he feels in the water, but he's more accepting of other religions than his family, who aren't happy that he came out to them as bi. He does have a problem, however, that he's trying not to let others know about yet... it embarrasses him, and he doesn't know what to do.

Subject: What is magic?
Magic is part of all things, but it flows in some people, creatures, places, and mediums more than others. It is believed that magic originates not with the Children of Sea, but with their mother and her siblings: Sea, Land, Sky, Sun, and Moon. Humans have very little magic, most of it focused on keeping their reality much the same as before (though feats of strength, luck, intuition, foresight, healing, empathy, and the like are fairly common). On the other end of the spectrum, there are places in the world that generate magic, like springs of water, and when those "springs" are in marine environment, they typically manifest as grottoes (in forests, they are groves or fairy rings), in the sky they become storms, and in mountains they typically are found in volcanoes or at the very peak). The merfolk are lucky in that they have the Rorqual to collect that power and share it with them, even when the grottoes are too deep or remote to reach. With this power, which is the lifeblood of merfolk, they create patterns to manifest different effects on themselves or the world around them, limited mainly by the patterns ("spells") they study (if you've studied a bunch of spells to blast foes with fire, jets of water, sonic screams, lightning or raw magic, you're not going to learn illusions or healing powers without learning different patterns). These patterns are illusion, transformation, abjuration (protection), evocation (blasts), vitality (healing or necromancy or both), enchantment (both mind-control effects and bestowing powers on items), divination (seeing the future, finding out who the fairest of them all is, reading minds, etc), and summoning (teleporting, calling something to you). True mages master them all, but this is slow and time consuming (which is why human mages are usually shown old), though merfolk (especially purple dukars) learn it more easily given their natural magic and the blessing of the Rorqual. The red, blue, green and white dukars each are skilled at using two of the eight patterns. The yellow dukars do not use magic, instead relying on willpower and their minds and bodies alone. However, merfolk must be careful, because if they exhaust all of their magic, they will instantly revert to human form and perhaps suffer amnesia about the merfolk and their identities until they somehow are re-powered, which for many (especially those who were in the water when they ran out of magic and drowned) never happens. That is why the Dukars are so vital... their coral powers (and, for the purples, their coral-enhanced spells) use less magic than unaided spellcasting, and the coral in their skeleton continues to draw in minute amounts of magic, helping them to recover from even the complete loss of power. However, spellcasting can work wonders and miracles far beyond the powers of the coral, and so it is taught to be used sparingly and wisely.

Subject:
NAME: Chase
HOUSE: LORELEI
APSARA: Manta Ray
APPEARANCE: Chase is 5’11, slender and is slightly muscular. He has golden brown skin and brown eyes with a hint of blue. His hair is short and dark brown. He has dimples on both cheeks. Chase wears either white t shirts or graphic t’s with shorts or swim trunks and his favorite orange sandals (usually one of his clothing items has some orange in it.)
MERFORM: His legs and feet fuse together as his legs flatten out. His feet become very thin and elongate, turning into a skinny tail. He grows pectoral fins that fan out from his ankles and end at his wrists (kinda like a flying squirrel), allowing him to swim faster and soar above the water. He grows 4 rows of large gills on his chest and stomach, on both the left and right side. He grows 2 cephalic lobes on the top of his head. To complete the transformation, his skin turns dark grey.
DUKAR ORDER: Order of Kupavi, Blue Dukar (Paths: Crystal, Fist, Swimmer, Messenger, Misdirection, Light, Justice)
OCCUPATION: Recently employed as Swim instructor at the "Making Waves" surf, scuba, and swim shop.
STORY: Chase grew up in a small town, kinda far from large bodies of water. He lived with his mom, dad, and little brother. One summer, Chase and his family went to the beach for vacation. Although he couldn’t swim, Chase walked as deep into the water as he could. He loved being in the water but just couldn’t swim. He always felt like someday, he would be able to explore the seas, with the ability to swim. When he got a license and his own car, he would go to the beach on his own. One day he drove to the beach and waded into the water. When he got neck deep in the water, something called to him, telling him to keep going. As he continued walking he saw a huge fish swim toward him. When it reached him, Chase grabbed its fin and was taken under water. It started to shimmer and suddenly, he was able to breathe and see while underwater. He looked closer at the creature and saw that it was a dolphin. The dolphin brought him to an underwater cave and stopped, motioning for Chase to go in. Chase made his way into the cave and saw that the walls were lined with colorful and translucent rocks as well as different colored corals. As he went deeper into the cave, a glowing creature appeared. The flat, wavy made its way to him and circled Chase. It was a Manta ray. The manta swam up to him and wrapped it body around Chase, and disappeared. When the bond occurred, Chase felt he knew what was going on. He left the cave and was greeted by all sorts of aquatic life and other merpeople. When offered a dukar, he chose the blue one, and vowed to protect others. He is currently a senior in college. He loves making new friends and always tries to help people if he can. Chase is gay, but only out to a few friends.

Making Waves - "Seadoggie", a Melusine (Sea Lion) naug, is something of a character, but cool one. Catering to both the tourists and locals, he offers everything from surf and scuba equipment, hemp/bead jewelry and swimwear to an experienced staff of swimming, scuba and surf instructors (and some who do all three).

Tress for Success - Run by Melusine Blue-Footed Barbie (whose odd mer form includes graceful azure webbed feet, brown and white feathers, a blue face, and feathered wings growing from her arms), this hair salon has staff trained in all kinds of hair. Barbie is also a licensed masseuse and includes a spa in her store.

The Docks - Includes the fishermen's market. Sailors and fishers take tourists out on tours and boat rides. Old Fiddlesticks, a fiddler crab naug with one arm that becomes an enormous claw in his mer-form, leader of House Glaucus, knows everything that goes on in the docks. The local fitness center (with its Olympic sized pool) can be found here as well.

The Boardwalk - Popular with locals, tourists, and Numosi, surprisingly.

Treasure Chest - With diplomas for architecture and industrial design, this swimsuit, seamstress, jewelry and lingerie store is owned by an enterprising betta syrinx named Betty.

The Sand Dollar - Run by a cuttlefish mermaid named Sepia, head of House Julanar, this sea gift shop is popular with tourists.

Aegir's Cove Public School and Randottir High are the local schools, each with merfolk faculty and staff (and nereid children), run by principals Jackson (orca melusine) and Ramirez (nurse shark and head of house lorelei).

Sea Star Rising is a popular artistic center for the community, producing seascapes & water art, from watercolor paintings to sculpture via focused erosion. There is also a theater and gallery for local art, including underwater photography, preferred by Syrinx, Glaucus and Maalirni.

Oyster Bed Inn is a 4 star hotel (going for five, but seagulls dive-bombed the inspector). It is run by Miss Jarvis (Glaucus Hermit Crab) who improves the place every few years.

Cap'n Hammerhead's Fine Dining offers the best seafood. The Captain is retired navy and Hammerhead Lorelei naug who dresses up in a pirate captain’s costume and puts on a show.

The Coast Guard base has many Jhimari, Melusine, Lorelei and Julanar using their knowledge, hunting skills and magic to ensure the safety of the coastline.

Aegir's Cove Lifeguard Station, run by Kupavi, hires merfolk and human alike as guards. Some of these young humans are even let in on the town's secret.

Atlantis Waterpark was built by a Persanai as a way to get people to have fun. It also has a dry section with a marine-themed carousel and other rides and games.

Greenteeth Wetland offers educational programs, a campground, and a breathtaking waterfall. It is protected by park rangers, including head of house melusine Lily (sea snake naug).

Vivienne has plenty of room for every mer to have their own coral home, with surprisingly luxurious accommodations. The leader of the city (and the Syrinx) is King Mola, who gained his apsara late in life, after he'd lost his legs in an industrial accident, only to find he didn't need them as an ocean sunfish bonded with him. He is also leader of the Hmurai Dukars and a powerful mage.

OOC - Not sure if I mentioned this, but merfolk automatically gain the abilities of their apsara... so some skates and eels might grant electric attacks, dolphins have echolocation (without the need for the dukar sounding power), cuttlefish can change colors, flying fish can leap and glide through the air, whales are tremendously strong, crabs can climb up walls, and so forth and so on.

Aegir's Cove also has a library, bookstore, video game arcade, candy store, ice cream place, italian, chinese, mexican, thai, and french restaurants, farmer's market, comic shop, toy store, and other necessities of a small beach town. If I didn't mention something, assume it can be found in the docks, the boardwalk, or somewhere in town.

Nearby sites of interest underwater are the reef, a kelp forest, a trench (full of creatures that may or may not be natural), a sunken pirate ship (the Semiramnis), the ruins of an abandoned coral city (the merfolk avoid it and don't mention its name), and the marine lab of the Pentex corp, which the merfolk also avoid (something strange and dark is going on there), along with several grottoes, some open, some hidden.

Merfolk: The Summer at Aegir's Cove Empty
PostSubject: Re: Merfolk: The Summer at Aegir's Cove   Merfolk: The Summer at Aegir's Cove Icon_minitimeMon Sep 06, 2010 11:59 pm

Name: Megan, though she prefers Meg.
House: Melusine
Apsara: Eurasian otter.
Appearance:Meg has naturally dark blonde hair, but it is currently very light from the amount of time she’s been spending in the sun recently. It falls to her waist in natural “beachy” waves. On her last trip to the hairdresser she asked for long layers and side bangs. It is often styled in a high, loose ponytail or French braid. She takes it down whenever she gets in water, though. Her large, almond-shaped eyes are the most prominent feature on her face. They are the color of granny-smith apples with bits of brown around the pupil. Her long, thick eyelashes are as blonde as her hair but she usually coats them in waterproof mascara. Her eyebrows are thick, dark, and sculpted perfectly for her face thanks to professional help. Meg definitely likes to use her eyebrows and big gestures when she talks. Her face is heart shaped, with round cheeks and a ski-sloped button nose. Her lips are full and light pink. They stand out like pink roses in sand against her skin. As her job involves her sitting in the sun all day, Megan has developed quite the tan. Her skin is very dark except for the large, snow-white area on her midsection caused by her swimsuit. She stands at 5’7” and weighs about 120 pounds. She’s thin, but not a stick. She has curves in just the right places. She stays in good shape by swimming and running. She has a tattoo of an otter on her right ankle and a scar above her left eye.
Merform: Meg’s backside, face, and hair get even darker until they reach a dark brownish gray color while her neck and chest become a creamy white color. The tip of her nose becomes black and whiskers grow around its bridge. Her lower half becomes very hairy and her legs get shorter and shorter until they are mostly thigh and paw. She also sprouts a large tail that tapers down to a point as it gets longer and longer. Her nails become claws and her teeth become smaller and sharper.

Subject: Meg's Bio: Part Dos
Dukar Order: Meg is a member of the Maalirn Order, the Green Dukars. (Paths: fist, swimmer, justice, messenger, shield, and warrior’s eye)
Occupation: Lifeguard at the beach.
Story: Meg has lived by water her entire life. She grew up in a town just about 20 miles from Aegir’s Cove. Her father was an Olympic swimmer and her mother died when she was just three. You can imagine a little girl growing up with a father whose whole life was swimming. In an effort to remain a large part of his life, Meg started going to the pool with her father at a very young age. He taught her how to swim and that’s just what she’s been doing ever since. Five years ago, when Meg was just 16 she went for a midnight swim in the ocean. As she got deeper a dolphin approached her. It was almost calling for her to keep going. At first she thought she was just sleep deprived, but the call kept getting stronger and stronger. She finally dove down and the dolphin came even closer. She grabbed its dorsal fin and held on as she felt it deliberately taking her somewhere. She kept wondering when and if it would take her up to breathe, but as time wore on she realized she didn’t need to. She could also see clearly. They approached a cave. She let go and waited for the dolphin to go in. But it never did, it just sat there staring at her. She finally took a hint and went in. The small cavern started to bubble and everything became illuminated. All she saw was rainbows and bright lights until a small brown otter swam in after her. As the two bonded, everything made sense. When she swam up she was greeted by hundreds of merfolk and was quickly welcomed into the House of Melusine as a scholar. She also eventually joined the Order of Maalirn, the Green Dukars. She wanted to improve her “scholar-ness” and protect her friends as well. It seemed a perfect fit. She now lives in an apartment in town and works as a lifeguard at the beach. She learned her great grandmother was a member of the House of Melusine and had the aspara of a whale. She is straight.

LoveDoviee, great character! I wasn't actually expecting anyone to take an otter apsara, and I'm impressed by how well you pulled it off. My only real concern, though, is that Eurasian Otters are (according to my searches) are freshwater otters, not saltwater ones. That said, fact is easily ignored in deference to a good story detail (I found out after making Phillip that Leafy Sea Dragons lack the prehensile tails of their seahorse cousins... oops) We'll just ignore your amazing saltwater abilities and my unusual flexibility icon_smile.gif

Oh, yeah, you might want to mention what Meg is a scholar of. We know she's a lifeguard, but what is she studying in the meantime? It could be anything... I know lifeguards who study medicine and kinesiology, ones who study marine biology or oceanography, ones who study to become teachers or something else entirely. Or is she an eternal student, who just likes studying one thing after another, without much of a focus yet, so long as it captures her interest?

OOPS! My bad. I looked up otters and found the cutest one (I'm such a girl....). Anyways, after more research and careful observation I have found (drum roll, please)........ THE MARINE OTTER. My "merfolk" appearance would remain the same except for the addition of webbed feet and hands. I appreciate the flexibility but I'm a stickler for accuracy. I'm kind of mad at myself for overlooking that major detail. Anyways, Meg studies history. Mostly American history formally, but she enjoys learning about the history of the merfolk as well. Again, Sorry!

I always find that you make such interesting RPGs, so I finally decided to join one. xD I'll try to work on a good bio tomorrow though, 'cause today I'm feeling all drowsy, tired and in pain 'cause I had a tooth pulled out today (blergh). So I'm in no good mental state to write a good and sensible character bio. xD

Though, is there a particular type of character you need for you rpg? 'cause I think I can be pretty flexible with that. :]

OOC - No real character types needed... I'm pretty open with this one... it would be nice to get some house Julanar or Glaucus types, but it would also be nice to have some more members of house Syrinx, Melusine, and Lorelei, too, and the various dukar orders are open to anyone. Personality and job-wise, I'm also pretty open, just looking forward to what you guys come up with. As long as it doesn't seem too similar to an existing character (especially personality-wise), I'm just along for the ride icon_smile.gif

Subject: Rei, 1
-- BASICS --

Name| Rei
House| Syrinx
Apsar| Parrotfish

-- APPEARANCE --

Height , 172 cm = 5”64'
Weight , 55 kilos = 121 lbs
Body type , Rei doesn't have the body of an athlete. Sure, she's quite thin (especially her arms), but her stomach is not toned. It's quite flat with just a little bit of baby fat. Because she's part Estonian, she doesn't have a tendency to gain weight, but at the same time she's not too fussed about a few pounds extra gained. She also has a pale skin tone. Just for the record.
Hair , Rei hair blonde, the shape a little unknown to her. It's not curly, it's not wavy, it's not straight. It's just a little messed up. Of course, she can always straighten it or curl it to give it a decent style, but to be honest, she quite likes her hair the way it is. Her hair is also mid-length: not long enough to go past her shoulders, but long enough to be able to tie or pin it up.
Eyes , Her eyes are big and grey. They look a little bit transparent sometimes too - especially in the sunlight. Though it's when she's genuinely happy, or genuinely laughing, when her eyes look the prettiest and most sincere. Black long eyelashes also surround her eyes.
Make-up , Rei is not big on make-up. She prefers leaving her skin clean and free of any toxins. Besides, she spends most of her time in water, so make-up and water don't really go well together.
Distinguishing features , Rei's eyes and hair are her most distinguishing features. She does have some scars on her (mainly her arms and legs) due to cliff jumping, diving, and basically hence scratching parts of her body against rough and sharp rocks.

-- MERFOLK DETAILS --

Merform| when transforming into her merform, Rei's skin changes into a multi-coloured organised mess. She is covered in patterns of bright blue, grey, pink, yellow, purple, turquoise... the list goes on. Her skin shines depending on what kind of light or darkness she gets in touch with. Sometimes, her skin will be of more “warm” colours, such as red, orange, bright pink, while on other occasions her skin will be of more “cold” colours like blue, green, brownish-yellow. Her legs transform into long tail with shining green and blue scales. The end of her tail is gifted with a wide and long, thin transparent-blue fin. Similarly, on her back, arms and elbow begin to appear similar fins. While Rei's merform fins might look weak and fragile to the touch, they are very strong and won't tear or break easily. On her neck however are gills which let Rei breathe underwater. Her hair while remains the same shape and style, transforms into a bright blue colour as well.
Dukar Order| The Order of Kupav, the Blue Dukars.
Paths|
Weapon: Claw - retractable coral claws manifest as hardened fingernails, out of the backs of the hands.
Defence: Crystal - a coral crystal appears on the palm, allowing the Dukar to reach out and harden the water directly in front of the crystal, making a force shield.
Senses: Stinger - creates a poisonous coral needle that can slow or paralyse opponents. This power combines with Rei's 'claw' weapon.
Movement: Swimmer - mimics the swimming speed of various creatures or increases those speeds.
Arcane: Light - coral creates illumination or dazzles, blinds or hypnotizes foes

-- HISTORY --

Occupation| Rei is a marine biologist. She studies the organisms living in the water and how they interact with the environment. Rei is very pro-enviromental and hates the fact that most people don't care about the environment they live in – especially then ocean. It annoys her when people say that “water covers 71% of the earth's surface, so what does it matter that we just leave our trash on the beach and water?”.
STORY| Rei's whole family was always close to the water and ocean. Her mother was a marine biologist and worked for Pentex corp (however she died a few years prior. Apparently it was a car accident, but recently Rei has been starting to think it wasn't an accident after all) as well while her father worked for the local zoo in the oceanic section. Rei was hence always in touch with the ocean and the world. But she never really understood why her parents insisted that they should go to the beach every day and go scuba diving or rock climbing. Sure, she loved it, but sometimes Rei felt as though it was almost like a chore. Everyday in the water for one hour, even if it was freezing cold outside.

Nevertheless, Rei was interested in the ocean and the well being of the organisms living in the water. So when she finished high school and went off to university Rei studied marine biology. For four years Rei studied the subject and after her graduation when she finally received her diploma and credits, Rei returned back to her hometown. At first she thought it was just because she did miss living by the sea and her parents.

But then, instead of going straight home Rei was actually pulled toward the ocean. She thought none of it until she came across a sight she had never witnessed before and that, according to her studies, was something very, very unusual. It practically never happened. A dolphin was by the shore, as if waiting for something. Somehow, Rei knew it was for her. When she came up to the dolphin, Rei was shocked when she understood everything it told her. It wasn't exactly a voice that was spoken out loud, but it was like someone else was talking in her mind.

Rei understood however. For the first time she understood everything her parents did clearly. They were merfolk as well, or at least knew about the existence of merfolk and they knew their daughter was one of them as well. Rei followed the dolphin into the cave. She was surprised a bit that she could breathe underwater, but at the same time she wasn't. It was as if a part of her mind that always knew she was a merfolk suddenly awoke.

When she reached the chamber the dolphin left and Rei waited. She didn't know what she was waiting for, but she knew she had to wait. She knew it was going to change her life forever. And it was true for an hour later another sea creature submerged and Rei was awestruck. It was a parrotfish, bright, bold and colourful. Rei, reached for the sea creature and just as soon as her fingertips touched the parrotfish's blue fin a bright glow surrounded the two and when Rei awoke the parrotfish was gone and Rei was alone. When her feet touched the water once again Rei's whole being began to transform into something that when she was a child thought was a fairy tale.

Subject: Rei, 3
Story 2| When Rei swam out into the deep sea again in her new form she was greeted by the community of merfolk. There she was taken to her House of Syrinx. There she choose the Blue Dukar Order of Kupav where she further developed the abilities she had gained.

Despite the fact that most merfolk avoid the marine labs of Pentex corp, Rei actually does want to get a job there in order to figure out what is going on and possibly put a stop to it. If the marine labs are actually helping the oceanic community, Rei will happily work for them. But if they're secretly trying to figure out the existence of merfolk and how to use them, well... she had to discover the secret to them put a stop to it all along with the other merfolk, right? Rei also doesn't like the fact that someone wants to transform Aegir's Cove into some sort of resort. It will only destroy the environment and ocean more in her opinion. She doesn't mind small tourist groups that are looking for serenity and solitude, but she's not so keep on the hordes of people.

Sorry for the delay, guys.. I'm on vacation, and finding internet access has been tough.

Milosc, Rei looks great... parrotfish are among my favorite sea creatures, and they're incredibly beautiful. Good job tying in the mystery of Pentex, by the way.

grmn12, Rex also looks great! I wasn't expecting a jellyfish, much less one of the most venomous creatures on the planet, but you pulled it off brilliantly. I really like the way you designed his appearance and mer-form.

Our Merfolk so far... let me know if I got the wrong impression while summarizing them.

*bmmnns - Phillip of House Syrinx (Leafy Sea Dragon), Order of Numos (Tentacle, Foeform, Sympathetic, Swimmer, Phantom), Openly bi SCUBA instructor with an embarrassing secret that will become noticeable sooner rather than later.

*Mavruck - Chase of House Lorelei (Manta Ray), Order of Kupav (Crystal, Fist, Swimmer, Messenger, Misdirection, Light, Justice), Mostly closeted gay college student whose lifelong dream of learning to swim was fulfilled in the most fantastic way possible, leading him to a career as a swim instructor.

*LoveDoviee - Megan of House Melusine (Marine Otter), Order of Maalirn (fist, swimmer, justice, messenger, shield, warrior’s eye), Lifeguard and student of history who is just beginning to unravel her own family history.

*Milosc - Rei of House Syrinx (Parrotfish), Order of Kupav (Claw, Crystal, Stinger, Swimmer, Light), environmentally-friendly Marine Biologist, seeking to unlock the secrets of Pentex and follow in her mother's legacy.

*grmn12 - Rex of House Julanar (Box Jellyfish), Order of Persana (psychic powers), Marine Photographer whose lifelong connection to the water was finally realized, and who hopes to inspire others with his art.

SPLOOSH!

Phillip launched himself out of the water, and the light of the sun just beginning to appear on the very edge of the horizon was still enough to cause every droplet to glisten in the morning air as he crashed down into the water, his bright yellow, white, and green fins and hide contrasting with the still-dark water. Leafy fins that gave his apsara its name fanned out about him like wings, and he floated to the surface again, drifting on the tide and enjoying the relaxing embrace of the water bearing him up along with the sweet kiss of air. The beach was like a meeting of two worlds... a mix of land and water, balanced in a complete whole... not unlike the merfolk themselves, he thought as the sea foam tickled the currently amber skin of his chest. However, it wasn't time for idle musings, for surfers would probably hit the beach to catch some early waves soon, and not ALL the surfers in Aegir's Cove were merfolk. The fishing boats would probably be heading out soon as well, and it was getting increasingly risky to remain in merform in full view of everyone (especially since, away from the kelp forests, Phillip really didn't blend in). Phillip inhaled slowly, calling to mind his human form, and letting his mer-form wash away, replaced by tan skin and strong legs, the last clothes he'd been wearing (a wetsuit) restored to his human frame by the inherent power of shapeshifting. He swam to shore, then dried off, and started to walk up the beach to get ready for a day at work.

Chase walked along the beach, listening to the sounds of the waves. He saw a hermit crab scurry across the sand toward the water. He picked it up and placed it in the water. He sighed at the thought having to head to work. “Maybe I should have got a job as a deep sea explorer, then I could swim in the ocean as much as I want instead of staying in the shallow water. I barely even get students.” Chase continued to walk down the beach, kicking up sand, when saw Phillip. “Hey Phillip,” shouted Chase as he quickened his pace to reach him. “Hey. What you up to?”

OOC - That's actually up to you, Milosc... Chase and Phillip both work at the same place, explaining their familiarity. There are enough merfolk (and plenty of those who come from outside the Aegir's cove community, especially those who first get their apsara) so that not all of them know each other.

"Hey Chase!" Phillip grinned at his friend and coworker. "Just surfacing after visiting my home in Vivienne for the night... felt more like sleeping in my, heh, "oyster bed," than in my surfaceside apartment. I'm planning on heading towards work, but I was thinking at stopping at Encantado's Diner for breakfast. Care to join me and see who else is there this morning?" He used a specially hidden towel to dry himself off, spending extra time to ruffle his hair, and splashing the salt off using the beachside showers next to the lifeguard station. As the water hit his skin, the glitter caused by the reflected sun seemed to reveal a pattern of leafy fins and amber and white stripes, but it faded as soon as he turned off the spigot, vanishing so swiftly that anyone who wasn't mer would think it just a trick of the light. "I could really go for some blueberry pancakes after the swim. I'm feeling kinda hungry lately for some reason," he said, placing one hand over his abs as if rubbing his tummy. His eyes widened as, he did so, though, and he swiftly pulled his hand away. "Uh... huh, that was weird... must've been my stomach moving or something... weird that it didn't rumble... maybe I'm coming down with something? I think I'm going to stop at the CVS when I'm done..." His skin now oddly pale, Phillip made a point not to let his hand move from his side, but otherwise tried to appear cool.

OOC - No, Phillip doesn't have anything contagious, and he's not poisoned. He's just experiencing an unusual side effect of his seahorse apsara that is specific to him (so no one else should be coming down with stomach pains or weird hungers).

Chase leaned against the lifeguard station and waited for Phillip to finish rinsing off. He watched as Phillip's skin quickly changed into an amber pattern and back. He looked away so Phillip wouldn't think he was staring. "Sure, I could go for some breakfast. I haven't eaten yet and i can hear bacon and eggs calling me." As Chase's stomach growled, he saw Phillip rub his. "Looks like we both can't wait to get breakfast. You ready? And I'll walk with you to CVS, if you want. "

Merfolk: The Summer at Aegir's Cove Empty
PostSubject: Re: Merfolk: The Summer at Aegir's Cove   Merfolk: The Summer at Aegir's Cove Icon_minitimeTue Sep 07, 2010 12:00 am

Phillip chuckled, "Yeah, I suppose we're pretty exotic beach life, at that, huh Chase. This isn't going to end up on the town's "Buff Beach Boy Bods 2011 Calender," is it? Because Rex, if so, you need to get my good side... and probably have Chase soaping up my back or something. It'll be all the rage, and sold out by midnight," he teased with a wink at his fellow mermen. "Seriously, Beach Life is your theme for the morning? That leaves us, the gulls, sand crabs, pelicans, butterflies, minnows, maybe dolphins? I'd have thought you be focusing on the coming sunrise or something... maybe even the Hibiscus bushes over there," he nodded towards the beautiful magenta flowers. "Wait... Rex... wrecks... why not join my class this afternoon for our dive to the wreck of the Semiramnis? You'll get some awesome shots, both of the shipwreck itself and the reef life that has grown up around it. Oh, and if you really want beach life, I think there's a colony of seals a little ways down on the other side of the Cove, not to mention I know I saw some sea stars and hermit crabs in the tide pools on my way in." He stretched, working the kinks out of his muscles, and readjusting to his human form after the night spent underwater. "As for what we're doing here, I spent the night in my place down in Vivienne, and ran into Chase once I got to shore. Besides, I was thinking of surfing a bit before the crowds come in, but now I'm really feeling hungry for those blueberry pancakes. Want to join us?" He slipped on a green Aquaman tshirt and flip-flops, and started heading up the path from the beach into town, walking backwards so he could face them. Chase's cheeks were slightly flushed, as if he was blushing, and Phillip spared a moment to give him a surreptitious once-over. Chase was pretty hot, and sort of a mystery. Rex, on the other hand, was extremely good looking as well, but a little more of a known quantity, and Phillip was certain Rex was straight. His musings, however, were cut off when his stomach rumbled, this time from hunger, and he shrugged, grinning apologetically at the guys. "Ok, my stomach and I vote that either I get some breakfast or I go back underwater to inhale sea monkeys again, and I want me some pancakes. Who's with me?"

When he heard Phillip mention food, his blush went away. "Yes. I am starving. I want my bacon and eggs." Chase started walking backward. "Come on, hur-woah," Chase tripped and fell back. With a grin, he said, " Ow. I think I landed on a rock."

Rei woke up unusually, even for her, early in the morning. She couldn't sleep though. Her room at the house was always so boiling hot. She either could never sleep or she would wake up sweating as though her body has just run twenty miles without her even waking up. This is the one thing (apart from hordes of tourists) that Rei hated about summer. She was more always a cold weather type of girl. She might start needing to sleep back in her home in the ocean from now on. At least then she would never wake up boiling hot.

Rei stumbled out of her bed sleepily and started to get ready for another day. Today was the day she was going to have her interview with Pentex corp. in order to potentially work as one of their marine biologists. Many of her fellow merfolk had warned her not to go near the corporation, but Rei knew better. If there was evil it had to be fought against. It didn't just disappear just by wishful thinking. Besides, she was sure that the Pentext corp had something to do with her mother's death. And she'd be damned to hell if she didn't figure out why.

Rei slipped on a white summer dress under her simple black two-part swimming suit after taking a long cold shower. She also slipped on a pair of flip flops on her feet. It was too hot for flats or sandals. Her blonde hair was still damp from the shower, but Rei didn't care. If she went out it would dry within minutes due to the sun and heat.

Feeling starved Rei rubbed her stomach. She hadn't really eaten anything since 7pm the night before. She got too much into her work that when she went to sleep she completely forgot to eat dinner or at least some snack. So Rei knew that if she did not eat something, she would faint.

Rei left her and her father's house and made her way toward Encantado's Diner. They made the best omelettes with onions and cheese and Rei was desperately craving one. Within minutes Rei arrived at the diner. She always liked going there. She always saw people she knew and liked there - though then again, that was not surprising. The town was quite small after all.

Rei took a seat by one of the free tables and ordered her craved omelette as well as some raspberry tea. Despite the weather being hot Rei could not give up on her tea ever. It was her favourite drink after all, right next to cold water with a splash of lemon juice and ice.

After picking up Chase and making sure the rock hadn't broken the skin, Philip and Rex managed to keep their friend on his feet for the rest of the distance into town. When the trio from the beach arrived at Encantado's, Phillip spotted Rei and waved at her just as she'd begun to dig in to her omelet and tea. Even though it was still early, the diner was pretty crowded, and Rei's table was the only free spot. Sliding into place with an innocent grin, Phillip asked "Mind if we join you?" Rei was a member of his house, Syrinx, and the two of them had been in similar classes to master the power those with the apsarae of bony fish had over sea life. Phillip had always thought that Rei was stunning, with that classic mermaid appearance with her beautiful rainbow-colored scales and fins, and she was pretty hot in her human form as well.

With a smile, Chase sat down next to Phillip and said, "Well, whether you mind or not, we're here." He started looking around for waitress, waving at the first one that looked toward him. He started rubbing his stomach in anticipation. When the waitress came, Chase rubbed his grumbling stomach and said, "Can I get bacon, scrambled eggs, hm...and some hashbrowns. With a glass of milk please."

MEANWHILE...

Far out to see, on a floating platform, laboratory, and rig, the upper echelons of Pentex gathered to examine their latest experiments and findings. A an elegant, silver-haired woman calling herself Echidna began, by pressing a button, causing a section of the wall to slide aside, revealing strange glass tubes filled with a slightly green glowing liquid, in which were suspended humanoid figures... but with gill slits on the neck, webbed fingers and toes, sleeping eyes that were larger and more bulbous than normal, and slightly opened mouths, revealing rows of sharp, needle-like teeth. Then, the Pentex leaders gasped, as they realized that the liquid wasn't green, but the creatures were bioluminescent! "As you can see, ladies and gentlemen," began Echidna, "The Anglers are nearly ready for deployment. We have grown them from a combination of oil-based toxins and dead fish dna, along with that of a few drifters from the coast. Grown from test tubes and implanted with controlling technology that shapes their learning and impulses, they are fully amphibious, venomous, with heightened senses, and resistance to both the extreme pressure and extreme temperature of the depths. We are currently fitting them with natural weaponry in addition to their claws and teeth, and enhancing their swimming speed, as well as trying to find ways to camouflage them as humans when on the surface. That last part has been tricky, but I'm confident that with the metamorphic cells of frogs, it should be possible. They will make excellent deep sea divers, able to drill and build and hunt specimens from the waters where human divers, and even submersibles, would be impractical." They applauded, and she took her seat, while an Asian man in a lab coat stood up
"We at the lab have found a way to not only drill and store greater quantities of oil, but to enhance its combustible capabilities as a sort of super-petroleum. The substance shows some remarkable qualities, almost as if we'd invented something radioactive."
Another man, with graying hair in a military uniform, rose and said, "Thank you, Dr. Mizuchi. That will come in handy. The security team and radar sensors have encountered roughly human-shaped creatures swimming far deeper than divers can descend in the area, though they seem to be staying away from us thus far. We've also found... stranger things out there. Some of the boys at the bio lab have been picking these bodies apart, but they make Dr. Echidna's creations look like supermodels... and they seem drawn to the rig. We've got new marine submersible "AGWE" Armor for each diver, including miniature torpedo launchers in the arms and foot propellers to enable them to reach great speeds, plus the mechanical guys are still working on making the armor even better."
"Very good work, everyone," purred the mysterious man sitting at the end of the table, making all the other members of Pentex shudder. "Things are going... swimmingly. I am sure that our goals will be achieved very soon. Now, Marcus, I want you to hire this young lady... she might prove useful." He thrust forward a folder with a photo of Rei. "Set her up near the upper part of the rig, close to the surface, and have her examine the health of the sea life in the area. I want her thoughts on the matter... it will help us better understand how to proceed to clear them out entirely. Very well... everyone is dismissed."

Subject:
The sea holds life, promises, treasures, fortune, wonder, mystery, and heartbreaking beauty. But the sea is also a place of death, disaster, sorrow, loss, murk, and terror. One group of merfolk magicians (a tube worm julanar, a trigger shrimp glaucus, a leopard seal melusine, a flounder syrinx, and a gulper eel lorelei), determined to gain greater power than their brethren and escape the restrictions of mortality, performed a ritual that struck a blow against not only the children of the Sea, but the Sea itself! While these powerful spirit entities reeled in agony, the human sides of the magicians were sacrificed, as was their individuality. Where once there were five, now one twisted, chimerical monster emerged: Scylla. Arrogantly calling itself the Sea's sixth child, Scylla attacked the merfolk, even corrupted their greatest champion, a dukar, by reforming him as a monster made entirely of black coral and red tide, Charybdis. Together, the two retreated into the blackest depths, but occasionally, reports will arise of hideous "merfolk" bearing the features of several animals at once, and armed with black coral, who worship Scylla and Charybdis as gods, and who are to be fought back by the true merfolk at all costs... less their goals be realized, and the Sea and its children are harmed yet again, perhaps never to recover. The merfolk refer to these creatures as Nuckleavee.

OOC - Sorry, that last word should be Nuckelavee

"Oooh... so many choices. Do I want the blueberry pancakes, the cinnamon french toast, or the strawberry and whipped-cream waffles? I guess I'll be good and stick with the waffles, sausage links on the side, plus a cinnamon bun, blueberry muffin, plus a glass of milk, water, and orange juice each, please. Huh... I'm hungrier than I thought." Once the waitress left, Phillip turned to the others. "So, any gossip?"

By all means, feel free to join! More people are always welcome, and the story is pretty flexible, so anyone can jump in.

Subject:
NAME: Jake
HOUSE: Julanar
APSARA: Orange Sea Pen
APPEARANCE: Jake has a healthy olive skintone from all the sun he has gotten from living in The Cove most of his life. His hair is a deep earthy brown that always what he describes as "perfectly" messy but is really from hardly doing anything to it. It falls right before his light brown eyes that shine with specks of gold in the sun. His body is in good shape and he is proud of it. He won't hesitate to show off his hard work from all the surfing and the lifting he does at Making Waves. Jake isn't too proud of his thighs which are almost always a kind of pasty white nor the zig zag scars and cuts covering his back and sides. He stands at 6,3" and has a broad body structure. He keeps his body shaved except his legs.
MERFORM: Jake's legs come together to form a long bright fluorescent orange yellow tail that has smaller tentical looking frills that fan out to make a quil shape. His elbows and shoulders also sprout smaller clear stalks he can use for better movement while his sides have quil like tenticals that sprout from his sides. These allow for not only excellent current flow but also resistance. His skin turns from tan to a smoldery goldenrod with an orange glow.
DUNKAR ORDER: Order of the Kupavi The Blue Dunkar. (Paths: Fist, Crystal, Misdirection, Swimmer, Light.)
OCCUPATION: SURF instructor at Making Waves.
STORY: Being put in foster care nearly as soon as he was born, Jake's early years were cold and lonely. The first family to adopt him was abusive both verbaly and physicaly. He constantly broke into fights with his father and by the time he was school age they put him back into foster care framing him "too destructive to resume stay." Foster care became troubled when Jake started to retaliate against other kids. The system wasn't sure what to do with him until a fisherman from the cove decided he wanted a son. Jakes whole aura changed from the kid who hated everything to one who loved all that was around him. His step father counted this up to one thing and that was the ocean. From that point on he spent nearly eight hours playing and swimming every day. After he started making friends and surfing his moods mellowed out and he became the happy go lucky guy he is now. Early one morning while practicing new tricks he went out almost halfway when something began moving the water underneath him. After a few seconds of still water a large tentical wrapped around his shoulders as if asking him under. Although he was hesitant at first, Jake dove in and swam deeper than he thought possible when he reached what seemed to be a dark shaft. He turned to leave frantic with fear but the giant squid seemed to tell him "Go." So he floated slowly to the bottom and was suprised at how the dakness swallowed everything. He nearly backed out but in a rush the cave came to light with bright color and the walls were covered by too many sea pens to even count. The rainbow of light was almost undistinguishable except for a bright orange light in the center. It was a 3 foot sea pen that shone the brightest and that suprised him, it up rooted itself and swam to Jake. He reached out a shaking hand and there was a flash of light and then he transformed. As the tail and tendrils grew Jake knew this was what he was. When he went home later that day he told his dad everything and was surprised to hear that it actually ran in the family. From then onto his first year at college, Jake was bent on finding out more on his life and new budding bi-curiosity.

"What else is there to do at this time in the morning except gossip and surf... and we just left the beach, so surfing's out," reasoned Phillip, shrugging his shoulders. "I'm confused as well... the crowds are still flocking down here, so you should at least have the children's and mommy-and-me swim classes. Yeah, the oil spill is not looking good, but the prevailing currents should keep it out of our waters for a couple months or so. What are you concerned about?"
He stretched, yawning softly, before remarking, "Hey Chase, have you had the chance to talk with the new surf instructor? I think he's mer, too, but he's not in House Syrinx or the Numosi Dukars, so I can't place him."

"Well, word kinda spread about that one kid who almost drowned. Now not many people trust me to teach them." said Chase with a shrug. "I'm still new to this job and I had a full class that day." *I should have paid more attention. What if i get fired?* he thought to himself. Chase sighed and shook the thoughts out of his head. "I've seen him but haven't talked to him much. He seems pretty cool." His stomach started growling, and he looked around for the waitress.

I think Seadoggie has been looking for additional lifeguards, but most of them seem to want to stick to the beach patrol instead. I think you'll be ok." When the waitress got back, he began digging in. His hunger was surprising even him! He made a mental note to do a good hard workout at the gym that evening to make up for going into this feeding frenzy, but then wondered if it could be a result of his... situation. He suddenly felt a little sick, and slowed down a bit, pausing to ask, "So, have any of your spotted anything unusual under the water lately?"

"Maybe I can apply for a life guard job. I'll think about it." As the food was set down, Chase quickly started eating. He looked over at Phillip and saw that he wasted no time either. "Dude, you should slow down. The food isn't going anywhere." He noticed a pained look on Phillip's face but decided not to ask about it. He wanted to ask but not in front of the others. So he decided to wait till later. "I haven't seen anything. But i have noticed that some of the aquatic life acting a little spooked about something. Why?"

Ignoring the comments on his eating, Phillip continued, "Just that the fish are disturbed by something. They seem more skittish when I use my Syrinx power. And there are rumors in Vivienne... urban legends about some creepy experiments Pentex has gotten into in other places, and ancient legends about a lost tribe of merfolk who turned to dark magic and corruption, armed with black coral." He began eating again, this time, more carefully, and polished off the orange juice.
"Actually, hey, I'll be right back, but let me run over to the store for a sec. Here's my part of the meal and tip," he said, standing up and putting down the change for his wild repast, hurrying out the door. Entering the store and making sure no one was looking, he went to the aisle, grabbed a small box he'd never thought he'd need, and hurried to pay for it, stashing it in his bag so no one would notice it. He really, really didn't feel like explaining, and for a moment, he felt like he was going to be sick, but his stomach settled without expelling its contents, and he sighed, took a deep breath, and made his way to rejoin his friends at the table. "So... didja all miss me? Sorry about that... had to pick up something for a friend."

The sunrise. Jake was up to watch it regardless of how early it was or how tired he may be. He had seen it before plenty of times but standing on his back porch and facing the ocean on the cliff was perfect. Feeling the warmth on his skin, he looked over the edge and for a brief moment felt the need to jump into the crystal blue surf. It wouldn't be the smart thing to do at all. Tourist would soon show up at the shop for lessons that he had to teach. Maybe a few real surfers would already be out enjoying the fresh waves and few hours that the beach would be empty. He knew his father was already up and working or at the very least just heading out. Sometimes it would be better to do the smart things in life. Maybe one day Jake would do those things but not today. He pulled his t-shirt over his head and took a few steps back before launching himself over the side of the cliff. The wind wiped at his face and howled in his ears but the only thing he focused on was his mer form. Slowly the changes started. First was skin as it shifted to a bright smooth yellow gold and seemed to glow with the colors of the sun itself. Nearly translucent stalks started to grow from his shoulders and elbows now and his sides were beginning to sprout small quill like shapes that would steady him in heavy current. Last his legs came together to form a bright orange tail covered in large feathery quill structures that ended his body in a point. From the moment the transformation was complete he was terrified. His mer form always seemed to awaken that common sense of fear that he tried to ignore other wise. He didn't belong so high up in the air not knowing what would meet him in the ocean. Nets, sharp rock, coral, tourist. Safety. As soon as his body hit the water a sense of calm spread across his mind. This was where he belonged and as he looked around he knew why. Colorful fish were scattered along probably headed toward the coral reefs and a small band of seals seemed to be making their way to the other side of the cove. The waves started to pick up and Jake dug his tail into the soft sand on the bottom and let his quills fan out making him nearly impossible to move. He could sit like this for hours on time but he knew he was late for work and decided to head out to where he could come up unseen and look natural walking to the beach. While he swam he focused on his human body and the changes took place so when he surfaced on the other side of the beach he looked completely normal. Walking to the main part he saw his class waiting. You could always distinguish them from anyone else. They looked awkward standing there with their long boards waiting for a surf god to teach them how to look cool in the water. He gave them a smile and then shouted at the top of his lungs "Are you guys looking for your surf instructor?! Because he quit! I will be the replacement and let me say, some of you are about to quit too. But it's okay because the rest of you have a better chance of surviving without them." A few people laughed nervously and about five people left with half excuses like they needed had somewhere else to be. This left him with a group of 15. He knew that five or six more might leave after they started leaving him with the most dedicated of the group. His boss didn't like all the refunds but Jake thought it was hilarious. Besides if they left that fast before surfing they weren't into much to begin with. After some land instructions he decided to let them go out on their own and taste the waves. He would be back in about an hour and by then some of them would be okay. He headed to Encantado's and saw one guy run out like he was being chased and go into a store and then come out a second later to go back inside the dinner. Jake laughed to his self and found him sitting at a table with two other guys. "Why in such a hurry? I swear you ran in there like you needed tampons or something." he said with a laugh pulling up a chair.

Phillip blushed as the new guy walked into Encantado's. Brown hair, nice eyes, in verrrry good shape... and a surfer, to boot. On the downside, he'd spotted Phillip's mad dash in and out of the drugstore and was teasing him. Carefully summoning his inner reserves of wit and dignity, Phillip managed to keep a straight face, and even smiled, before replying "Nah, not tampons... a desperate need for chapstick. Care to try it out with me stranger?" he asked with a teasing lick of his lips. Continuing, he asked "You're the new surf instructor, right? I'm Phillip, a scuba instructor at Making Waves." Sotto voce, he murmured merfolk-only details that he didn't want anyone not at the table to hear, before continuing and restoring his voice to normal volume. "I'm of House Syrinx, have a Leafy Sea Dragon Apsara, and am of the Order of Numos. How was class? It looks like a beautiful morning to catch some waves... saw some of it as I surfaced".

Jake laughed as he felt his face get hot. If it wasn't for his tan he might have been found out but there was no way he could turn that challenge down. He stretched and rubbed his arms remembering he never put a shirt back on and wondered if he should get one but decided against it. Turning Phillip,s chair around he sat on his lap with his face turned to Phillip's. "Scuba huh? Your pretty brave for scuba guy. I like that. But leave chapstick in your pants because I don't need it." He smiled before returning to his chair and started in a low whisper, " I'm house of Julanar, Orange Sea Pen Apsara, and order of Kupavi." Sitting up he continued the conversation as normal. "Tourist, they don't know anything about anything. Most of them dropped out and I left the hopeful few to kind of work themselves out. The ones that stick with it will come back for more lessons while they're here and maybe next season. When is it not a beautiful time to catch some waves?" Jake looked thoughtful for a second and realized probably now with all the non surfers, swimmers, and mer people around leaving dumb cove people and worse tourist. "You know when the waves are really beautiful though? Night time and a full moon. Nothing can get any better. Um..when is the best time for scuba?" He said with a laugh.

"Really, the best time for scuba depends on what you want to see. A night dive, for instance, can be eerie and mysterious, while a dive during the day can be gloriously beautiful, a wreck dive can be creepy and legendary, a cave dive can be an adventure, etc," Phillip replied to Jake with a smile. The guy was cute, and almost as over-the-top as he himself was. "Storms, though, are generally a bad choice for diving," he continued. "Unlike merfolk, divers need to surface, and there needs to be a boat safely resting above them, not crashing up and down on the waves and maybe whacking divers over the head. So I've got to watch the weather reports."

Phillip, winced teasingly at the "interesting" crack and guy-punch, but, shook his head in response to the question. "I'd love to show you and your students what I can do on a surfboard, dude, but it's actually nearing time for my batch of tourists and the rare serious diver, so I've got to go get ready. Nodding at Jake, he stood up and turned to Chase, "You know, Chase, I think you should stick it out. Prove that you're a good swimming instructor, handle the hecklers, and get the lifeguards or another instructor like me to help out by keeping the kids from doing anything dumb, especially when you've got a large class...
